At the top, among the peaks of Vang Vieng in Laos

We leave to see, feel and stimulate all our senses. With the curiosity to know, to go beyond.

We are on a motorbike, one of those with gears, typical of the area. We arrive in front of a sign that leads to a viewpoint. We look at each other and without doubt we decide to go there.

There is no paved road, only red soil, stones, dust and puddles. All around the countryside, rice fields, cows and peaks of thick vegetation. The view is breathtaking.

It’s early morning. Besides us, there are only the farmers and the rice-workers. Without a watch and without a stop, we start to climb. It’s hot, but the air is still breathable and the effort, the pleasant one, is a lot. The path is narrow. In some parts there are imposing rocks. Others have the enormous roots of the trees and the mud. Where possible, the locals have tied up bamboo sticks to hold on..

The more we climb, the more the jungle makes itself felt. The way becomes steeper and steeper. There are few times we look back, maybe none. Our destination is at the top, closer to the Gods. We know that, to be able to dream big, we have to go higher.

We do not exchange words, only looks. A solitary journey, like the one we make towards ourselves and which serves to strengthen us. Nature says it all. What you can perceive by touching the stones is inexplicable, they support you and the branches are stretched like arms, strong and safe. Those enormous roots give a firm foundation to our human feet and to our mind.

At every step the silence is greater. You only feel your breath and futile thoughts fly away. Leaving behind all the banalities that modernity makes you believe to be important every day. We are much more focused on listening.

There is only you, always a bit closer to the sky. And as the spirit slowly enters the trees, flowers and stones, we reach the summit. Here, in the quiet, the questions that it is normal to ask ourselves every day, are reformulated more clearly. Now everything comes back.

“On the mountain we feel the joy of living, the emotion of feeling good and the relief of forgetting the earthly miseries. All this because we are closer to the sky”. Emilio Comici

On the border between the finite and the immense, it is time to return among men. Enriched by the adventure and recharged, we begin to descend. The lesson of this experience is one of the most interesting. The mountain explains life to you, the real life. It puts you back in your place. Where there is no excuse or justification. Where determination is the only thing that counts.
