It won’t be a “Namaste” that makes you a yogi

If you come to a yoga class at The Warriors House you will never hear “Namaste”. You won’t hear it because we don’t believe that a term can make us more yogi and more spiritual. We are not in India, nor do we speak Sanskrit. It seems to us simply a banalisation that many do on arrival, at the end of the practice and between one smile and another. Most likely because they have heard it from many teachers and maybe on some tutorial video that crowds the internet and so it comes natural to follow it, as if it were a mere fashion.

“Namaste”, a term now erroneously associated with Yoga, is used in India and Nepal and can also be found in the form of “Namaskar”, literally means “I bow to you”, and in a spiritual way it is translated as “the spirit that is in me greets the spirit that is in you” or “I bow to the divine that is in you”. In India it is used as a normal daily greeting. To be clear, “Namaste” is said every time you meet another person during the day, like a “Hello”. It is done with the hands together, in prayer in front of the heart. Or bringing them to the forehead if the person in front of you is older or has a higher position.

But here we are not in India. We are in Thailand. And the greeting is done in the same way, with the hands together and bending down the head as a sign of respect, but saying Sawasdee Kaa (for women) and Sawasdee Kraap (for men). That’s why, with us, that we decided to stick to the culture of where we live and to the local ways of doing, you’ll only hear this greeting.

We sincerely hope that Yoga – seen as a trend – will go out of fashion as soon as possible. We are nobody for… We don’t judge and the more to be judged. Each of us has our own awareness. Or, at least, he should have it. But we believe that a person’s spirituality and being a yogi is not measurable by a greeting. Especially if it has no concrete connection with Yoga.
